Probiotics During Pregnancy Prevent Pre-term Labor

Safe and healthy pregnancy is your first priority when you get pregnant. There are so many serious pregnancy complications that can harm the baby-to-born or the mother, or even both of them. One of the threats is pre-term labor. But now you can be relaxed, as taking probiotics during pregnancy or before it, can prevent pre-term labor. Why probiotics?

Pre-term labor often cause many health problems for the baby, also stress and anxiety for the parents. Many cases of pre-term labor are caused by vaginal infection, which stimulates the labor. In this case, bacterial vaginosis is the culprit.

Bacterial vaginosis in which there is an overgrowth of vaginal flora, most commonly Gardenerella vaginalis or E. coli. Normally, vagina has a layer of friendly bacteria, whose job is to prevent harmful bacteria to grow up. However with the widespread uses of antibiotics before or during pregnancy, the colonization of friendly bacteria will be unbalanced, and it can cause harmful bacteria to start growing. These bad bacteria can find their way to the uterine cavity, and permeate the amniotic sac. They will weaken it, and cause it to rupture.

There are two strains of probiotics that is believed to be the best prevent of vaginal infection or bacterial vaginosis. They are Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 & Lactobacillus reuteri RC-14. Find out more about this friendly bacteria in What is Good Bacteria?

Anyway, by taking probiotics during pregnancy, both orally or vaginally (vaginal probiotics is believed to be the most effective method), you are providing a healthy condition for laboring your baby. Besides taking probiotics, please also make sure to have a lot of rest and take a lot of water. Dehydration can lead to contraction.
